Cheek and Chin Augmentation

If You’re Considering Facial Implants

An underdevelopment of certain bony prominences of the facial skeleton can detract from ones overall facial appearance.  The skeletal areas most commonly affected are the cheek and chin regions.

By augmenting these regions with surgically implanted materials these deficiencies can be overcome and facial harmony restored.

A flatness to the cheek area and a recessed chin can be enhanced by the addition of silicone implants shaped as cheekbones or shaped as the point of the chin. It should be noted that fat grafting can also used to simulate the cheekbone but is not as reliable an approach for cheek augmentation as is the use of silicone.  In addition, recessed chin problems are a reflection sometimes of an underlying dental malocclusion problem that is better suited to a jaw repositioning operation then a silicone implant However, for the purposes of this section only the surgical implant approach will be discussed as possible solutions for augmenting the cheeks and chin.

Surgery to enhance the cheeks or the chin are performed as an outpatient and can be accomplished either under local or general anesthesia.  For the cheeks, Chicago Plastic Surgeon, Dr. David A. Ross makes incisions within the mouth just above the gum.  Working through these incisions a space is created over the cheek bones following an outline of the cheek implant drawn on the skin.  The implant is then inserted into this space. For chin implants Chicago Plastic Surgeon, Dr. David A. Ross makes incisions within the mouth in the lower lip just above the gum can be used to introduce the implant. An external incision in a skin crease just beneath the chin is an alternative approach.  The implant is inserted through one of these incisions into a space made that follows the outline of the implant drawn on the surface of the chin.  The incisions made inside the mouth have the advantage of not producing a visible scar.

After surgery the patients experience a moderate amount of pain easily controlled with analgesics. There is always some swelling of the tissues that remains for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. There as well may be some bruising but generally very little.

Other Procedures Performed by Dr. David Ross:

Cheek Implants - Cheek Implant augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure that is intended to emphasize the cheeks on a person's face. To augment the cheeks, a plastic surgeon may place a solid implant over the cheekbone. Injections with the patients' own fat or a soft tissue filler, like Restylane.

Buccal Fat Pad Removal - Buccal fat pad extraction is for those with extra round cheeks who wish to have a slightly more chiseled look.

Lip Enlargement/Lip Augmentation - Lip augmentation procedures increase the size of the lips to make them fuller and more attractive. The procedure is used to help women and men of all ages. The upper or lower lip may be treated singly, or both upper and lower lips may augmented at the same time.

Perma Lip - Permalip is a solid silicone implant used to create fuller lips. Other implant choices are a saline filled, gortex coated implant and Alloderm which is freeze dried tissue.

Silicon Lip Injections - Injection of liquid silicon using a micro droplet technique. The results are permanent.

Lip Reduction - Excessively large lips can be reduced surgically by sizing portions of either the upper or lower lip or both. Final scars are hidden inside the mouth.

Chin Augmentation/Chin Implant/Silicon Chin Implant/Chin Enlargement - Chin implants are made in various shapes and sizes. They are made out of both solid and semi-solid materials that have been used successfully for years. Although the results can be dramatic, the implants look very natural. Many people have reported that after their chin implant surgery, people tell them that they look better, but they can't tell exactly why.

Chin Reduction - Chin reduction permanently decreases the projection of the chin and balances the facial proportions.

Chin Cleft Surgery - Surgical removal of cleft chin (cleft chin reduction) involves the removal of the attachment of the chin muscle (mentalis muscle) to the chin fissure or groove. The release of the attachment is done from inside the mouth. Upon the release of the muscular attachment, a space is formed which must be filled with tissue or chin implant to prevent reattachment and ongoing external chin indentation.

Risks include the possibility of an infection that might require the removal the implant as part of the treatment. Malposition of the implant also may occur requiring revisionary surgery. But of these, complications a quite rare. Though the above information is accurate, it is also incomplete.
